The criminal justice system in California and the United States of America is inherently discriminatory against poor people and people of color — this is a complicated issue which must be addressed from many fronts.
Michelle Alexander’s The New Jim Crow should be suggested reading in High Schools across California. The rich get out of jail when they are guilty, and the poor stay in jail even when they are not. Cash/Money Bail Reform in the form of SB10 is an important step to reform the system.
California has the highest rate of police killings of any other state. Police officers should be required to engage in de-escalation tactics. There should not only be consequences for officers who commit violence or murder, but also for those who act as accomplices in these crimes. No victim of police violence should be denied immediate access to healthcare and emergency services.
I am opposed to the Death Penalty, and would introduce legislation for its repeal.
